Viking War Page 26
London began to become more important at this time. It was fought over between Mercia and Wessex. Over the next fifty years Wessex increased its power culminating in the reign of Alfred the Great at the end of the century. The kingdoms of Essex and Kent gradually disappeared. They had been part of the Anglo-Saxon heptarchy but they had never been one of the major players. The balance of power had shifted from Northumbria to Mercia and would culminate in Wessex which became England. The shift allowed the Danes in the east and the Norse in the north to gain both land and power until by the middle of the ninth century the country was effectively divided in two; Danelaw was in the north and the east of Britain and England (Wessex) in the south and the west.
The place names are accurate and the mountain above Coniston is called the Old Man. The river is not navigable up to Windermere but I have allowed my warriors to carry their drekar as the Vikings did in the land of the Rus when travelling to Miklagård. The ninth century saw the beginning of the reign of the Viking. They raided Spain, the Rhone, Africa and even Constantinople. They believed they could beat anyone!
I used the following books for research
